The summer is almost over and the only new devices suitable for business use are the bulky HTC devices with poor battery life and the Verizon Moto Q9M. Nothing new on the Palm Treo front. It seems like innovation has definitely stalled. Several years ago when BlackBerry devices were dull, boring, and not multi-media friendly the innovator was primarily Palm. Now that BlackBerry has sleek devices on the market like the Pearl and the 8800 series customers are finding them more compelling then the supposedly "open standards" devices like the Palm Treo line.
Years ago when companies like Good Technology, Intellisync, and Microsoft were promoting their personal information management (PIM) syncing technologies there were devices being released that were worthy of choosing over BlackBerry. Today, Good is owned by Motorola (Palm should have bought them years ago, in my opinion). Microsoft has some level of PIM syncing capabilities in its Windows Mobile operating system. Intellisync is owned by Nokia. But where are the new devices to take advantage of some of these middleware products? Good, Microsoft, and Nokia are heavily dependent on favorable releases of new business class devices. Motorola and Nokia have an advantage of now owning middleware products. But neither have been able to release blockbuster devices that take advantage of the middleware companies they purchased.
It seems like RIM's BlackBerry devices have the upper hand today and more customers are choosing to switch, or switch back in some cases, to BlackBerry. Unfortunately, it still is a proprietary package that locks customers into one hardware/software vendor. But the improved technology, exponentially better battery life, and appealing hardware design is a small price to pay for the lock in.
Rumor has it that Google is developing a "gPhone" that allows customers to make calls without monthly fees. Now that's innovation! However, it remains to be seen if this is purely a consumer device or if it will have any level of PIM functionality for business.
